Wildlands Plants Identification Practice Exam

An invasive species is primarily defined as an alien species that, when introduced to a new environment, has the potential to cause significant harm to the ecosystem, economy, or human health. This definition highlights the critical aspect that the species is not originally from the area it invades (making it an alien species) and that its presence disrupts local biodiversity, often outcompeting native species for resources such as food, water, and space.

The concept of harm is central; invasive species can lead to a decrease in biodiversity, alter habitat structures, or even cause the extinction of native species. Additionally, they may negatively impact agricultural productivity or introduce diseases that affect both wildlife and humans.

Understanding this definition helps inform management strategies for native species conservation and ecosystem protection. In contrast, the other options describe characteristics that do not align with the invasive nature of these species, focusing instead on native status, economic benefit, or controllability, which do not capture the essence of what makes a species invasive.
